We are set to become the largest open access workshop in Europe after being awarded £2.7 million of support from the Mayor’s London Regeneration Fund (LRF).
(LRF: £1.35 million, match funding: £1.35 million).
The maker industry in London is under threat. The declining availability of workshop space and the rising cost of overheads has created a barrier for businesses to establish, grow, and retain the talent London produces. The concept of sharing space, tools and skills reduces this risk and has paved the way for a growing movement of open access workshops seeking innovative solutions to create sustainability within the industry, and make opportunity accessible to all.
Our 11,000 sq ft open access workshop in Edmonton currently offers our members access to industry standard machinery and processes, bookable on a flexible pay-as-you-go basis. This pioneering approach to professional workshop space reduces the risk for individuals to explore ideas and establish businesses.
With the fund we will transform a local warehouse into 50,000 sq ft of workshop space, offering a greater range of machines and processes. The new facility will be the largest in Europe, able to cater for a community of 1,000 freelance makers, small businesses and designers with a wider range of trades and disciplines. Supported by Enfield Council and in collaboration with artist studio provider ACAVA, an ecosystem of creativity and making will be established in the Meridian Water regeneration area.
